A Civilized Vote
Edward Dawson, Baron Charcroft, watched his man Ruger close the study door behind him and knew that he'd be standing watch outside as he always did when the executive board of the Recovery Committee met. Charcroft looked around the room at the other five men -- all wealthy, all powerful, all influential -- and got right to business.
"We've all had a chance to look over Boltz and Malerbi's proposal. It appears to be well thought out." The two men who'd been chosen to work out a plan of action regarding the Caleran situation looked gratified, glancing proudly around at their colleagues as though expecting applause. Charcroft ignored the show of forgivable pride and went on, "Unlike FitzHugh and Towers, who foolishly attacked the Calerans at their point of strength, Boltz and Malerbi wisely suggest attacking at their point of weakness. Their superior technology won't be able to make up for their limp-wristed sentimentality."
( ''I still don't see this working,'' objected Olivera, the man to Charcroft's left. ''Calera has a hard and fast policy against cooperating in any way with kidnappers. The policy has been in place for over a thousand years'' )
